Narendra Modi Wiki: Narendra Modi, full name Narendra Damodardas Modi, is an Indian politician and government officer who ascended to become a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was born in Vadnagar, India, on September 17, 1950. (BJP). He helped his party win the Lok Sabha (lower house of the Indian parliament) elections in 2014, and as a result, he was sworn in as prime minister of India. He had previously served as Gujarat state’s chief minister (head of government) from 2001 to 2014. Gujarat is located in western India.
Early life and political career
Modi was educated at Gujarat University in Ahmadabad and earned his M.A. in political science. He was born and nurtured in a tiny hamlet in northern Gujarat. Early in the 1970s, he joined the pro-Hindu Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) movement and established an Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad chapter in his region. Modi quickly advanced in the RSS’s ranks, and his affiliation with the group was extremely beneficial to his ensuing political career.
Modi joined the BJP in 1987, and a year later the Gujarat unit of the party appointed him as general secretary. He had a significant role in significantly increasing the party’s influence in the state during the ensuing years. Modi helped the BJP win the 1995 state legislative assembly elections, which in March enabled the party to become the first-ever BJP-controlled administration in India. Modi was one of the BJP members who took part in a coalition government in the state in 1990. However, the BJP’s hold on the state administration was only in place until September 1996.
Political ascent and term as chief minister of Gujarat
Modi was designated the BJP’s national organization’s secretary in 1995, and three years later he was made the organization’s general secretary. He kept that position for an additional three years, but in October 2001, he succeeded Keshubhai Patel, a fellow BJP member who had been blamed for the state government’s inadequate reaction to the devastating Bhuj earthquake in Gujarat earlier that year that killed more than 20,000 lives. In a by-election held in February 2002, Modi ran in his first-ever election and won a seat in the Gujarat state assembly.
After that, Modi’s political career was a combination of intense controversy and self-promoted accomplishments. Particularly questioned was his conduct as Gujarat’s chief minister during the 2002 riots that tore across the state. In the aftermath of hundreds of Hindu passengers dying when their train was set on fire in the city of Godhra, he was accused of encouraging the violence or, at the very least, of doing nothing to halt the massacre of more than 1,000 people, predominantly Muslims.
As a result of his response to the riots in 2002, the United States refused to grant him a diplomatic visa in 2005, and the United Kingdom did the same. Even though Modi was never charged or punished in the years that followed, neither by the judiciary nor by the authorities, some of his close friends were convicted of involvement in the events of 2002 and given lengthy prison terms.
Political Career of Narendra Modi
Police and other officials have also accused Modi’s government of taking part in extrajudicial executions, often known as “encounters” or “false encounters.” One such incident occurred in 2004 and featured the killings of a lady and three men who were allegedly conspiring to kill Modi. They were allegedly members of Lashkar-e-Taiba, a terrorist group with ties to the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks and located in Pakistan.
But Modi’s continued political success in Gujarat elevated him to a position of authority within the BJP hierarchy and paved the way for his re-entry into the political establishment. Under his direction, the BJP won a big victory in the legislative assembly elections of December 2002, taking 127 of the 182 seats in the house (including a seat for Modi). The BJP won the state assembly elections for Gujarat again in 2007, taking 117 seats, and again in 2012, with 115 seats. The party ran on a platform of growth and development for the state. Both times, Modi prevailed in his races and was re-elected as chief minister.
Modi built a solid reputation as a capable leader while serving as the governor of Gujarat, and he is credited with the state’s economy’s explosive rise. Modi’s standing as the most prominent leader inside the party and a prospective contender for prime minister of India was further advanced by his and the party’s election successes. Modi was selected as the BJP’s candidate for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections in June 2013.
